Nexgard Spectra FAQ

Is NexGard Spectra effective against mites?

NexGard Spectra protects dogs from some of the common mites that affect dogs. It is effective against demodectic mange (Demodex spp.), sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei) & ear mite (Otodectes cynotis) infestations.

How does NexGard Spectra for dogs work?

NexGard Spectra contains afoxolaner and milbemycin oxime as its active ingredients. Once administered, the formula is quickly absorbed into the dog's bloodstream. It kills parasites by overstimulating their nervous systems. Afoxolaner eliminates external parasites, such as fleas, ticks and mites, whereas milbemycin oxime targets internal parasites, including heartworms and intestinal worms.

Does NexGard Spectra help my dog with flea allergy dermatitis (FAD)?

NexGard Spectra comes with a rapid onset of action against fleas and helps control newly acquired adult fleas before they can lay eggs. This helps control re-infestation and relieves signs of flea allergy dermatitis.

Which tick species does NexGard Spectra protect my dog from?

NexGard Spectra protects dogs from brown dog ticks and Asian longhorned ticks.

Is NexGard Spectra effective during heavy flea infestations?

NexGard Spectra quickly kills adult fleas before they can lay eggs and helps prevent re-infestation. However, fleas continue to emerge from your dog's environment due to the continuous development of flea eggs, larvae and pupae in the surroundings. Therefore, it is recommended to continue treating your dog throughout the year without interruption. Also, you should treat all the animals in your household for fleas.

What is the difference between NexGard and NexGard Spectra for dogs?

NexGard chews contain afoxolaner as the active ingredient, protecting against fleas and ticks. NexGard Spectra contains an additional active ingredient, milbemycin oxime. As a result, in addition to fleas and ticks, it protects dogs from heartworm disease and intestinal worms.

Can I give NexGard Spectra to heartworm-positive dogs?

The safe use of NexGard Spectra in heartworm-positive dogs has not been evaluated. Talk to your vet before using it on dogs with existing heartworm infection.

Is it necessary to administer NexGard Spectra to my dog with food?

You can give NexGard Spectra to your dog any time that suits you, with or without food.

Can I split NexGard Chews to treat more than one dog?

To ensure your dog's parasite protection for a complete month, you must administer the entire chew appropriate for your dog's weight. It is not recommended to split the chews.

Is NexGard Spectra safe for dogs with epilepsy?

One of the active ingredients in NexGard Spectra, Afoxolaner, is a member of the isoxazoline family of drugs. It is recommended that you use this treatment with caution in dogs with a history of epilepsy or any other neurologic disorder. Please talk to your veterinarian for expert recommendations before using the treatment.
